There was only one airline serving that route. The company had private planes, so it was cheaper to use our planes if 2 or more of us were flying to Bend.

Easy solution. Any distance where it takes more than 2 hours to fly, you take a plane. Less than 2 hours, take the train. Only somebody with a lot of time in their hand will travel coast to coast in a train.
