I had one of those two-door Atlantics when I was 18. It had a 3 speed automatic box. I think it was 1.7 L, no fancy F.I, just a good’ol Solex carburator. Rated at 69 HP at sea level, we were at 7,500 ft above that in “El D.F.” so we had maybe, maybe 60 HP. 0-60 MHP, in about 18 Sec.

Probably the mufactuers realized that the mayority of the  consumers did not do any off roading or real towing with those tough as nails vehicles. And all they wanted was the tough as nails look. So the manufacturers obliged and created the crossover.

I Think that SUVs represent the selfish phase we are going.through right now here in the US. They know SUVs are not better than minivans or station wagons, they get worse fuel milage and don’t handle well, and are much more dangerous to pedestrians and other cars. But as long as they FEEL safe and powerful, they rest…
