The only reason why I'm NOT still in financial trouble from doing so is that the person I cosigned for wrecked her car and GAP paid it off (this was after she was basically 30+ days late for over a year on payments).

The general answer to this question is don't. There's a reason that person can't get the loan on their own. Plus for the most part people shouldn't be getting loans for anything other than a mortgage. Buy your stuff in cash.
