Sleeping in someone else's home is dangerous, but the dangers can be lowered by having a reputable service vouch for people. Most of the couch surfing I've seen done it through reputable websites and not (something like) Craigslist. However, I do not believe such a service exists for vehicles.

In the scenario, are any of the 2-3 PC's storing the files or are they all streaming from another location?

When we went, we priced a hotel room (and wound up staying in the Paris Hilton [though they call it the Hilton Paris] outside the Eiffel tower); apart of the priceline was an addon for a nighttime tour of Paris from the river. It was great.

One thing I immediately see as "wrong" is Windows 8. :-P

Are you looking for the calendar to sync in real time? Real-time (or near real-time) is convenient in that if you loose/damage/break your phone inbetween manual tethered syncing, any changes are lost. If you use the google services, the changes are synced every X amount of Y automagically.

Running a G device and an N device on the same wireless network will bring the entire network speed down to G.

Have you tried Mint?

Each port can run at a different speed but the speed is determined by the device connected to it. Once you go from a device that's 10/100/1000 to 10/100, there's no going back (I mention this because you mentioned you have a variety of switches).

Get a better son :-P

Headless doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't a GUI. Windows Home Server is designed to run headless yet is a full fledged version on Windows that you can RDP into.
