One thing I immediately see as "wrong" is Windows 8. :-P

Mavis Beacon?

Are you looking for the calendar to sync in real time? Real-time (or near real-time) is convenient in that if you loose/damage/break your phone inbetween manual tethered syncing, any changes are lost. If you use the google services, the changes are synced every X amount of Y automagically.

Another piece of advice; if you're not sure about a lens, rent it for a weekend before you blindly purchase one. This way you can get a feel for it before plunking down big money.

SBSettings is awesome

Refurb MacBook Air?

I'd be extremely careful about doing this and think that it's a bad idea. What if there's an accident? What if you're inadvertently a drug mule because the car was packed with coke? Who do you call if the car breaks down or is stolen?

Picasaweb or the new Google Plus. Lets you set albums to private (so only people you specifically invite can see the photos, even if someone forwards the link to a "non-approved" person) and will let you upload photos/videos. Best of all, it's free.

Running a G device and an N device on the same wireless network will bring the entire network speed down to G.

Have you tried Mint?

Each port can run at a different speed but the speed is determined by the device connected to it. Once you go from a device that's 10/100/1000 to 10/100, there's no going back (I mention this because you mentioned you have a variety of switches).

Defron:

What if you nailed a thin piece of wood to the door frame and then attached the weatherstripping to the wooden strip?

Get a better son :-P

Headless doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't a GUI. Windows Home Server is designed to run headless yet is a full fledged version on Windows that you can RDP into.

The Belkin and Netgears were never widely supported by alternative firmwares; it seems it was predominately the Linksys and Buffalo routers that were.

I haven't used TED in quite some time in favor of ShowRSS as I'm pretty sure a while back the developer stopped working on it. ShowRSS is a website where you add the shows you want to watch to your list to which the site generates a custom RSS feed. Put that RSS feed into your torrent client of choice and the episodes
