I’m almost 50 and these things have been around since my youth and we all knew what they were for (as kids we used to jump up and down on them to try and screw up the numbers, which I highly doubt worked).

I think the idea with plastic guides is that with the chain in firm contact with the guide, you need a designed wear surface. The choice is the chain or the guide. If the chain is the wear surface it will break without warning. At least with the plastic guides, you have an audible warning long before catastrophic…
