The boom is about 1,600 pounds of aluminum and steel flying much slower than it’s really supposed to. Every one of those dents is because refueling the A-10 inflight is hard.

Because of how slow the A-10 flies, the tanker has to fly well below its normal cruising speed so the A-10 can even keep up. When the tanker slows down, theres less air flowing over the boom’s control surfaces (ruddevators). When there’s less air flowing over the ruddevators, the boom becomes harder to control.

Speaking from personal experience, things are usually better dry than wet, be it air, liquor, or your pants.

Mathematically you’d be correct. Practically though, below -20 or so, the differences stop making a difference.
