They can charge with the enforced EULA. Either by donation or by a sub fee or entrance fee. They can't charge for in game bonuses of any sort (except cosmetic)

You are incorrect. They can charge for access to the server, just not for preferential treatment in game content. Mojang are fine with a Disney World "buy a ticket for access to all the rides" system, not a "pay to win, profit heavily from whales" system. I actually like "needlessly huge" PC cases, simply because it's easier to fit parts (and my hands) in it. Doesn't mean I don't like smaller cases; one of these days (when I have money), I'd like to build a compact (but still a monster) PC.
