How many wild cards? Do Notre Dame and other independents automatically get one? You're still omitting 60% of the Top 10 and letting #37 in. No one would stand for that.
Other sports have a finite number of divisions/conferences in which all teams play each other. The win/loss record is significant. In no sport is the second-best team in a conference locked out of the playoff.
It's based on wins against opponents of greatly varying quality. It's basic premise is flawed.
In many cases, the tiebreaker comes down to the BCS rankings, which defeats the purpose of your proposal.
Using the final regular season BCS rankings for reference, your playoffs would include:

Why should a Top-5 Conference A team get left out in favor of a Conference B champ that barely broke into the Top 20?
