NYT doesn't necessarily need writers who know stuff about cars - they just need writers with a bit of common sense and the ability to think about what they're saying.

To be honest with you, for daily driving, I'd rather be driving a modern car, with the weight of all the safety requirements, rather than a car that weighs hundreds of pounds less, yet folds like a soda can in a wreck..
