First, Windows Defender and MSE are among the best out there. And second, it's far more than just those... the OS is far more locked down, with a lot more inherent security built in... and better, more secure default settings.
There was a very good reason to dump Areo... first, it was starting to look dated and silly, and second, all that processing of transparency and gradients and drop-shadows used CPU and degraded battery life. Windows 8 is highly optimized top to bottom to make laptop and tablet batteries last longer.

No, Windows 8 doesn't "suck" because it requires training. EVERYTHING new requires training. That doesn't mean it sucks.

As others have said... make sure you have Windows Update configured to update all Microsoft software, not just Windows... and then run Windows Update over and over (rebooting in between as necessary) until there are no more updates to apply.
