Yeah, it’s a narrow window that had a particular 30-pin iPod adapter supplied by BMW that plugged into both of those ports; some clever souls made a really spiffy bluetooth adapter that works for those cars (I think mostly pre-2010 or 2011, but that also includes a lot of Minis that share BMW electronics)

Odds are you will see an aftermarket lightning to 3.5mm adapter that has a split port or pass-through port design to allow both charging and listening to solve this problem of cars with 3.5mm jacks that also need charging
