20 years ago, however, there was the Glasstron(by Sony, no less), and the Forte VFX1. Neither could be considered successful as I recall, but the Forte did exactly the same thing the Oculus does, just with shittier 90's tech, and the Glasstron was an HMD that could do motion tracking. :P

Minus the controllers, VR headsets are really just stereoscopic 3D screens connected to gyroscope or other form of motion/position-sensing, possible to do even with just some cardboard as Google proved. Save for the awkward shape, you could nearly put a box around a 3DS and get the same thing on a very basic level.

Eh, the 3DS would’ve happened regardless, and eventually someone else would’ve gone the headset route. Not to diminish what Oculus did in getting the ball rolling, but the end product...has not exactly flipped turned upside-down.
