Yeah I’m a few centimetres shorter than her and while I really enjoy my height I do get reminded of how Western society at large sees it as unappealing when people regularly ask if “it’s hard to find a boyfriend”, men approach me randomly to tell me they could never date someone taller than them (I usually reply that…
I don’t think doing brownface once almost 20 years ago for Halloween should cancel someone.
You and I are the fortunate ones- the problem for people with the most severe autism isn’t that society doesn’t accept them hitting their head repeatedly or biting themselves or others.
Comparing Autism which is not an illness, and a natural part of human variation to harms caused by exposure to harmful substances is inaccurate, and a really terrible look. If you want to find ways of preventing intellectual disability that’s a direct side effect of harm to foetuses that’s one thing, but neither ADHD…
It’s pretty depressing to have to point this out, but “prevention”, that is preventing Autistic people from existing is a pretty horrific prospect, let alone goal to be actively seeking as a society.
Yeah it’s depressing that a system being broken is used as evidence for it not being appropriate to seek workplace accommodations for health issues.
A delusion has to be a belief not commonly held or accepted in the person’s culture, so not just any false belief.
Yep, and viewing Autistic people as having communication deficits rather than a different communication style is also looking like a bit of a neurotypical misconception as well. Autistics communicating with other Autistics pass on information about as accurately as neurotypicals do amongst themselves.
Autism isn’t an illness, it’s a neurotype, like ADHD. There are both strengths and challenges that come with different neurotypes, that differ widely between individuals.
So what is the point you’re trying to make?
While people are still trying to prevent Autistic people from existing, it’s going to be a pretty fraught topic and viewed with a lot of suspicion by Autistic people.
Autism isn’t a scale, there’s no such thing as severe or mild Autism.
Sensory hallucinations, anhedonia, poverty of speech, emotional blunting, asociality, and distortions of self-experience such as believing that thoughts are being inserted into one’s mind? You sure?
Let’s not use a highly stigmatised mental illness as a metaphor, tho. You can just say “mess”.
That’s not actually true. The apps can and do collect data on you if your contact details are in the phone of someone who has it installed. For example Facebook builds up “ghost profiles” of people who aren’t on Facebook based on the information their contacts have on them, supposedly “just in case” they want to join…
Well yeah, it’s influenced by how women and traditional feminine traits in general are seen by society.
You can make any decision you want, bud! I could decide that the sky is green tomorrow if I felt like it.
It’s about lack of representation and trends, so if there was more and more varied Queer representation it wouldn’t matter as much. Also, if this storyline happened in a vacuum with no broader societal trend or context then it wouldn’t matter, but that’s not how society or media work.
I’m sorry if you didn’t understand that.
