It might have sounded fake because it's not his real accent. He's from London so he sounds a bit cockney in real life, I guess they wanted him to put on a different, more 'posh' English accent for Pacific Rim.

Red Dwarf didn't finish in the 90s, it just went on hiatus. There was a new season last year, which was pretty damn good. And they're probably going to film another next year too!
