I just thought of an acceptable (though informal) usage for "so": When making a logical connection between two statements, like "therefore", "thus", etc. :P

As I recall, the memorial is to the community, rather than "gamers who lost digital warships"; the names are of subscribers as of some cut-off point. It's more of a "thank you for keeping this game going strong" message than "we're melodramatically sad about those who digitally perished in the line of gameplay."

Definitely; good call! Such usage would be similar to "ah", "uh", or "um", which not only lacks information by also reduces confidence in the speaker's thoughtfulness.

There's a notable distinction between starting a sentence with "so" (e.g. "So, a guy walks into a bar...") and describing a property with "so" (e.g. "I am so hungry I could eat a..."). Granted, using "so" is weak means of description.
