Indeed. I’ve been pretty heartened by how little victim-blaming I’ve seen in the press at least.

Agree. This was my favourite of the books I’ve read this year.

Thank you for sharing this. I was back in NZ last week when this happened and the feelings of sadness and shame that this happened in our country are very strong over there at the moment.

It’s a fantastic piece of legal writing.

NO. WHY?!

That’s a common practice in a lot of cultures, I think, particularly in Polynesia. In Māori the concept of placenta and land are so intertwined that they have one and the same word (whenua).

Right? It’s so stupid. This isn’t Macbeth, the reigning monarch doesn’t get to choose their successor. The current law has been in place since 1701 ffs!

Absolutely. I’ve never ever heard the term “Welly wanging”, but as a rural Kiwi girl I’ve definitely participated in a gumboot throw or two in my time.

Kangaroo has a very similar taste to venison. It’s a strong, slightly game-y meat. It’s delicious.

Such a great movie, one of my absolute favourites.

She’s brilliant eh.

Now playing

She was in both! She played sister Mary in ‘Persuasion’ and Miss Bates in the Gwyneth Paltrow ‘Emma’. She always breaks my heart in this scene. Absolutely devastating.

Downton Abbey was terrible, British Imperialist “things were better when everyone knew their place” bullshit at its worst. But then what would you expect from the arch-Tory Julian Fellows.

I’m Spartacus and so’s my wife.

What? Huh?

This show is brilliant. Much wittier and sharper than it has any right to be.

Looks like Keisha Castle-Hughes would’ve been 11 at the time of filming. I completely agree that she deserves to be on this list.

I see some similarity of character between the Prince Regent and Sir Walter Elliot. On a completely different scale, of course.
