The Chinese probably have an anti-ship ballistic missle. Our navy could lose a significant number of it's carriers in the first few hours of any conflict with China.

Back when I had a sailboat I had the sacrificial zinc on a wire and just threw it in the water when at anchor or at the dock. It seems to me that the navy could figure out some way of changing zincs that doesn't require a dry dock. Worst case have some guy in scuba gear do it.
Um, in case you hadn't noticed, Amazon Prime is a vending machine for nearly everything located in your home (or pocket if you have a smartphone). You punch a few buttons and a day or two later the item drops down onto your porch/carport.
@parachoid: Clearly this mom is not the sharpest tool in the shed and she doesn't even have the capacity to come up with a plausible excuse for her terrible choices.
Tragic. I wish people like this would just put their children up for adoption at birth so they could at least have a chance.
I read the whole piece and I still think the Mac App Store is a good thing because it will encourage coders to write for Mac OS X again. The past few years it seems like all the creativity and energy is going into iOS and Android apps and Mac OS X apps have languished.

I don't understand all the rage towards cyclists. Worst case, navigating safely around cyclists will maybe add a few seconds, and rarely over a full minute, to the average trip. We routinely have our trips extended by much more than that by safety measures such as stopping for red lights. Cyclists simply do not…
@z_man300: Thank you for speaking sensibly. It is tragic how easily people can work themselves up into a rage where they feel killing another person is appropriate.
Why not have the linear motor be longer and run up the side of a mountain near the equator? Could you get enough speed to reach orbit that way and skip the scramjet entirely?
@Sprzout: Maybe I am missing something, but how do they avoid the fuel overheating problem when they launch the space shuttle? Isn't it going comparable speeds with a big load of fuel? Also, how do they keep the astronauts from cooking? If you can keep the crew from cooking from the heat of air friction, can't you…
Finally! I have been waiting for a way to get SMSs sent to my Google Voice number while I am at home so I don't have to carry my prepaid, and rarely used, cell around the house.
Another gizmo to attach to the TV that allows me to watch some, but not all, of the stuff I want to watch on TV? No thanks.
I am keeping my four monitors.
This is very true. If you look for it you can find lots of examples in daily life of people fixating on some concept or idea that appeals to them because it is cool, or otherwise resonates with them emotionally, and then making impractical decisions based on that fixation.
@prupert: Babies are calmed by motion and being in close physical contact with an adult. What we did when our daughter was that age was wear her in a sling most of the day as we went about our normal routines. That kept her happy most of the time.
Start up Keychain Access. Go to Preferences. Check the box for "Show status in Menu Bar." This will make a lock icon show up on your menu bar from that point forward. Click on that lock icon, and the first option on the drop down menu is Lock Screen.

I spend the most time on reviews that fall in the middle (on Amazon the 3 and 4 star reviews). In my experience both the very positive and very negative reviews tend to provide more insight about the writer than the product.
I have never in my life recorded a telephone conversation, but a few times I have asked customer service reps if I can record our conversation. In my experience just asking if I can record the conversation helps get a better result when things are going poorly.
