In some cases the choices funnel down to un-alterable outcomes (some people die no matter what you do), but in other cases you can lose people that would otherwise make it all the way to the next episode if not the end of the series.
Legacy of Kain was an amazing game for it's time...there are aspects that would still hold up today. You should try it if you ever get the chance! The voice acting and story alone, is worth the time.

Oddly enough, there's some sort of filter on the screen that softens the pixels and makes it look really nice. So yes, XL is better, but not by a huge amount. If you have the original, no need to upgrade. If you don't have one, get an XL.
XL is far superior than the OG but getting the 3d sweet spot is far worse
