Persona has really gotten popular since Persona 3. Persona games are all standalone, despite the titles. I haven't played any myself, so I can't really tell you much, but one of the series' main draws is the social link system. They all also have really great soundtracks, too. 

Persona 5 is out for PS3 though.

Why talk about the GBA not having a backlight? Third party accessory lights were sold for the Gameboy Color, too. And one competing console for the original Gameboy did have a backlight: the Game Gear! So it's not like the idea of having a backlight wasn't around for over a decade.
