Most of the BMWs I see (other than SUVs) are base model 328i xDrives. They picked the cheapest, slowest sedan, with the added weight of 4WD, purely because they NEEDED that badge, they wanted to appear ‘classy’ (hence the sedan), and they are scared shitless of snow. How the car drives was irrelevant to their purchase.
Do you know why the 2 Series is now FWD? BMW once polled its 1 Series owners and MOST of them thought it was already a FWD car (it wasn’t). BMW owners do not care about what’s under the hood.
I think this car would have sold better - hear me out - with a cheaper and less powerful engine. It’s not powerful enough to compete with the cars it’s priced against, and it doesn’t get good enough fuel economy to justify its tiny displacement and size. How I think the lineup should have been: 155hp base, plus WRX…
