@DVDude: If I'm not mistaken, some time during that period automakers were forced to standardize their ratings to a more accurate scale (SAE?), hence the numbers going down when actual economy may have stayed the same or improved.
@schoolpsych: As far as Japanese imports go, it's been pretty popular for a while. Can't get too much of an angle when the car is already so low, but the cylindrical in-line muffler adds more to the look than the angle:
