Haha! I wasn't trying to start a flamewar or anything. I really do prefer my software open and free, so I personally choose GIMP over Photoshop.
GIMP is a great tool, but it's not on the same level as Photoshop.
If you have a bit more time and want to learn more about encryption/cryptography, Khan Academy has a pretty great set of lessons on the topic.
But then whatever you were using it on smells like rubbing alcohol. I can't deny the cleaning power of it though.
This is how I get classy:
Vlookup may be the greatest formula. "If(...)" is pretty close though.
Take it one step further and use PGP and an Air Gap for communication!
I wouldn't say it's for the average person. I think you're not getting a solidified answer because there isn't one. Your child porn statement is like saying the the Internet is only for sharing cat memes. It's more complex than that. Here are some examples from the Wikipedia link:

You could just forward your cell phones to your home number whenever you get home.
It's unmounted. I tried a test volume of 50mb first, which worked fine. Maybe the solution is just to have a much smaller volume.
I've tried using a TrueCrypt volume (5GB) on DropBox, but every time it finishes uploading, it starts re-uploading the entire volume. It does this even when nothing in the volume has changed.
I copied it straight from a new browser tab into the comment box. I think the latter situation you mentioned is what happened.
I have the one pictured above running on my Mac. It meets my quality needs and the price is pretty low now. I'm sure there's probably a better option out there now, but it's been pretty good to me for the past year.
Whited00r is the only reason I've kept my 1st Gen iPod Touch around. I'm really glad to see the Dev's are continuing support for it.
I haven't tried with my Wii. It's actually broken now. Won't turn on, but it's a hardware issue.
