I’d love to believe that this will give the Gawker Media outrage brigade a moment of pause before their next witch-hunt but it won’t.

Right, posting that someone else has issued a correction isn’t the same as correcting your own previous post that says the same incorrect thing.

There’s nothing wrong with the comment, except that it was phrased in such a way that “news” sites were able to take a snipit of it out of context and make her look bad. Like a real life version of this.

It’s also a reference to http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…, one of the most famous speeches of solidarity in history. It would have been weird if she didn’t include the Africa part, given that was the point of the question.

But she OWES us. She owes us perfectly formulated answers that are perfectly in tune with the Acceptable Progressive Ideology. By refusing to conform she is at best Problematic, at worst a White Feminist Who Refuses To Acknowledge Her Privilege.

Here it is. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for an apology.

Didn’t Jezebel post that same story? I seem to remember reading it here, and, that being the case, it seems like something the site should apologize for. It also seems like something the author is trying really hard not to mention.

No, Meryl isn’t ‘redeemed.’ Redeemed suggests she was in the wrong for a period. Hopefully shitty reporters are chastened, though.

I’ve known Meryl for over 25 years. She is one of the most generous, gracious human beings I’ve ever met, full stop. This particular case of faux outrage really pissed me off.

It seemed to me that, in context, she was essentially paraphrasing JFK’s “ich bin ein Berliner” statement. We’re all Berliners, we’re all Africans.

A journalist lied. And now other journalists who are reporting on the first journalist’s lies say only that it’s “not exactly” how things really happened. Y’all are disgusting.

It seems like a game of telephone. One major news source reports it and gets it wrong. By the time sites like Jez get it, simply posting from some other source rather than doing its own diligence, the original report is butchered even more. If there was a recording, that should be released because its not like major

I’m more than a little shocked that our society’s rush to be outraged might have led to a mistake.

Yeah, after this correction, where it seems like Meryl is not saying “white people count as diversity” (which is ludicrous) but “I can relate to films from other cultures because we share a common humanity,” (which is utterly uncontroversial) the people who need redemption (which still seems like a strong word) are

Well, fuck you stupid media with senseless headline-snatching. How dare you come at Meryl Streep like that?

“redeemed”? That’s arrogant.

I don’t see anything actually wrong with the comment now. She was asked if she can understand movies from certain cultures, and her response was basically, “I don’t know much about the intricacies of the Middle East but I think we all share some commonalities and I understand the humanities in those films.” Maybe I’m

Life started in the ocean! Probably deep volcanic sea vents. But humanity started in Africa.

The thing that I notice is that we’re all, there is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture.
