My youngest sister goes to a large state school in the South, and she belongs to a historically Jewish sorority. Apparently she’s heard members of other sororities criticizing hers because they’re ‘exclusionary.’

I literally read that sentence at least five times, each attempt more thoughtfully than the last...and I still had very little idea of what the heck I was trying to read.

The Machine is made up of the “prestige” white fraternities and sororities, not just sororities. Machine student government president candidates almost always win, and the Governor of Alabama has frequently been associated with the Machine in some way. It sounds silly but it actually does have influence in Alabama.

Me either, and I’m a white woman in Alabama. Then again, I went to what is predominantly a medical school. Nobody had time to pay attention to crapola like this.

Fuck this. These girls are the worst. I really don’t understand why we have greek life on campuses anymore anyway (and don’t tell me about how they “do so much philanthropy” because that is B.S.)

They went on to discuss March’s SGA Presidential election, in which several Alpha Gams supported Elliot Spillers over Machine nominee Stevie Keller, and blamed that support for Mary Harmon Tyson losing the Machine nomination for Homecoming Queen to Phi Mu Katelyn Katsafanas.

My wife and I were driving through Alabama this summer on our way to a vacation in Florida and I asked her “What comes to your mind when I say Alabama?”
