It was originally an access trail for an early 1900s antimony mine (Stampede mine) out at Kantishna, which sits within what is now Denali National Park. The bus was brought in during an effort in 1961 to re-clear and widen the trail to move more equipment in from Lignite Creek, which was just north of Healy.
It was partially driven and partially pulled behind a bulldozer (after it busted the drive axle) to serve as rough housing for some of the people working on cutting an access trail to a mine.
