One of the features I genuinely often miss from my old 2nd-gen 4Runner is the tailgate. I don’t miss having to roll the rear glass down to open it as much, though, that I’ll admit. The split gate in the style of that Rover or the 100 series LC is pretty much my ideal, er... rear entry option.
Good rundown. I’ll note that single speed drivetrains do have some advantages (less maintenance, slightly lighter, with belt variants reducing the odds of greasing up anyone’s calves as they ride), and for a flatlander city runabout this would still fit the bill perfectly.
