Love it or hate it, American Beauty changed my life. I realized that the reason for all of my anxiety and muscle pain was due to being in a job that I was completely unsuited for and it was sucking my soul away. The morning after I watched the movie, I planned a new life.

The only thing that is dated about this movie is the psychedelic images during the stargate sequence. I understand why Kubrick did this—LSD, the psychedelic drug of choice in the 60s, brought one “beyond his own mind.” Nevertheless, I’d love to see the stargate sequence with more contemporary imagery.
