In defense of Art and in defense of Elon Musk, the Cybertruck looks like that largely because of the limitations and parameters of stainless steel. It’s unadorned art - capturing the essence of what a sheet of stainless steel wants to be. Tom Wolfe, in “From Bauhaus to Our House” told the story of instructor Josef

Tesla is unique in that engineers get first crack at styling rather than people like Stephenson who don’t care about physics.

This is the whole point of this design. No dies necessary or stamping. You just need some big sheetmetal brakes. They’re not particularly expensive to get and the ss tech fastening is not exotic. So while cheap ss is more expensive than typical sheet metal used, they save by eliminating the dies, stamping process and

It’s not stamped. It’s cold rolled steel that is bent, and - I believe - welded at the bends, which is part of the reason it’s so planar. Elon stated they had to avoid stamping because it would break the machines (as you said).

I mean, brutalist designs done well are often wonderful and organic.

I would say it’s more neomodern design.

Well yes, the body of the car is the exterior—that is, there is no body-on-frame design like all other cars. I believe that was explicitly done to keep manufacturing costs down.

I also think that the aesthetics were more driven by the manufacturing elements. Use cold-rolled steel and make that the entire exterior (ie., no body-on-frame). And then to cut the cold-rolled steel into shapes that were easier to fit together. My guess is that these elements dictated the design, and didn’t really

OK, no offense, but where did this Frank Stephenson appear from all of a sudden? Sure, he seems to have been involved in some important design projects, but “legendary”? Now, I’ve been following car reports since the early 80s, and the first time I heard of Mr. Stephenson was very recently when he started commenting

I’ve always felt guilty for liking it, and I think I realized why: this is how cars would look like if they could get their clothes off.

Your could argue that the Cybertruck is “modern design” because it has no nonfunctional facades or needless decoration. Like most modern design it is cold and uninviting. It is vehicle brutalism.

I had similar requirements when shopping for a new car in collage. I ended up with a manual Subaru Baja. My only regret is selling it years later.

Just came to post this... ;)

When the answer is not Miata, it’s Matrix/Vibe.

Young man, you want a Toyota Matrix.

I mean that’s kinda what happens when your company doesn’t sell anything and the hype train goes off the rails. The should just use the last 40k to buy a tesla model 3 and pretend it’s the new prototype.

It’s insane. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. And all these commenters going on about “but there really is an alt-left blah blah blah”. No, there isn’t. And no, ANTIFA are in no way “just like” actual Nazis.

“Oh, my folks drove it up here from the Bahamas.”

If I had the money I’d be driving a swb Transit Connect. Maybe I should buy a used one.

Even back then, cars had a problem with low-flying pelicans.
