My first assumption on reading the headline was that Eurovision is judging pre-filmed music videos, rather than live performances. On that basis I looked at the above Lohengrin costumes and thought Ah Eurovision, never change.

I agree. I’m 52. When I was growing up, young men commonly talked about “(slur) bashing” (beating up men known or suspected to be gay) as though it was a sport. Ten years ago I’d never even heard of transgender people. It certainly never occurred to me I’d see marriage equality legalised in my lifetime.

there’s something describing trans people along the lines of “identified as one sex at birth and then another later in life”, which is interesting because A) it seemingly deliberately avoids the deterministic presupposition of “born male/female” and B) avoids framing sex as a binary.

So discriminate against men...just to be safe. Got it!

I sometimes have a tendency to reduce sex to binary terms in order to help distinguish it from gender, but that isn’t really true and I should be better about it.
