This sort of happened at an Audi dealer I used to work at - An Audi TT was stolen off the lot and over a year later it was “found” when the idiot brought it into a dealer in a neighboring state for a check engine light lol. He had put upgraded rims on it and everything haha. We recovered the car and he went to jail.

AWD is banned in many of these series for being too much of an advantage - Audi in 1988 and the Trans Am series for instance, so that may have something to do with it.
