@SG-17: Exactly. The whole grim and gritty vibe they're shooting for is a little outside the writer's comfort zone. And it shows.

I'm pretty sure that the amount of money/back end points they'd have to give to Nolan to get him to do another film after the upcoming 3rd Bat picture would make it unprofitable before they even started.
