As a long-time Frictional hater (seriously, how fucking overrated is Amnesia?!) SOMA is exactly what I’ve been waiting for Frictional to make. Scary, yes, but also brilliant, like System Shock as written by Philip K. Dick.

What makes it shock humor? The fact that it doesn’t match up with 2010s standards of what’s acceptable for comedy? Because it didn’t really change from Duke 3D’s standards. And maybe that was the problem.

I liked it. It’s something of a weird stratum of 10 years of FPS games (you can tell they stopped short of Call of Duty 4 because of the lack of ironsights or a focus on cover) and the jokes are all a bit out of date, but as a 2006 game it’s not bad at all.

i’m much the same way. i also hate wearing shoes anyway. i have a small mountain of shoes i keep by my door. the only time i wear shoes in the house is if my feet are hurting; sometimes the shoes help brace them and reduce pain.

I read it and I’m not happy. As someone whose career depends on free speech I’m extremely aware that there are important limitations to that free speech. I’m also extremely aware of how little people actually understand the concept of free speech — or the history of hate speech laws in the US.
