They were overchoreographed shlock with no drama at all. There is nothing worse than the fights in the prequels because they missed the point and just became incoherent mush.
It is definitely a situation of JJ liking everything to be super secret and mysterious. I don't think anyone needed Rey to be secret Jedi, since all it did was keep her off of marketing materials. The Force Awakens is now reliant on the next two films to provide satisfying and consistent answers for those questions.

As someone who is frequently and highly critical of the Davies Era, he simply does not get enough credit for the way he portioned lore and slowly built the show back up for the ground up. I doubt anyone could have done it better.
I rather enjoyed her in 7B as well. 7B is just something of a narrative oddity in the world of Who. It is a half series in which The Doctor is the exclusive protagonist, and an unreliable and biased one.
