I can attest to how rare the Passat W8 is in the real world. When I was 16 years old, I was riding my bike, and a Volkswagen Passat W8 made a right turn on red — when I had the right of way. I hit the hood, the roof, and then the pavement.

Meanwhile I bought the most stripped down GTI they ever made to avoid being stuck with a fucking sunroof. Sunroof is just a way of asking for water to eventually be in your car. Plus less headroom, added weight, etc. If I want the fresh air I’ll take my Miata out. 

get an Autobahn GTI then and flash tune it. My biggest complain about R is that it’s really expensive... and it doesn’t have a proper handbrake ;)

The fix for overheating is a larger radiator. It’s the first thing I had done after purchasing mine. After that I can drive the car however I want, in whatever climate I want without worry. Aside from that, and the annoying blend door actuator, the car has been pretty solid so far!
