Here in Alaska we walk on ice from mid-October through late April. That’s over half the days in the year, and they are also the darkest days — sight is one of the three senses we use to keep our balance (proprioception, especially from they way our heavy heads pull on our neck muscles, and the vestibular — inner ear —

1) Add a little water. Rice tends to dry out in the fridge.

And that goes double now that some institutions are considering revoking tenure due to the major budget crisis caused by Covid!

In the words of the Boston Brahmin lady, asked where she shopped for clothing: “We have our clothes.”

I, too, am in my 7th decade, use KeePass, and sync the Android version on my phone with the desktop version via Dropbox.  As for notifications of potential breaches, Chrome does this for any passwords you allow it to remember for you.

Dr. Gedde adds that some individuals also just have slower livers . . .”

I disagree. I was gifted a six-pod Harvest a couple of years ago. After growing the pods that came with it, I bought a bag of 50 pods/sponges (as Aerogarden calls them) and some cheaper hydroponic fertilizer with the same NPK ratio as the ridiculously expensive Aerogarden food. I use regular seeds that you buy in

Obviously, one of those tiny little bandaids oriented vertically over the bridge of the eyeglasses would keep them from sliding down (or from being removable).

The only rooms I could spend more than a few seconds in without freaking out are the sauna and the utility room.

In which case, dark is a far greater concern.  Helsinki is just a tad south of where I live in AK, and we’re already down to less than eight hours of daylight.  So the shortest day there (winter solstice) is probably a little over five and a half hours, with the sun rising no higher than the top of your forefinger if

My state wins with three!

I recently confirmed my Irish citizenship via the foreign birth registration process. Anyone, anywhere in the world, can do this if they have a grandparent born on the island (including in Northern Ireland, I believe). It costs about US$350 to apply and you need certified copies of everything from your Irish

I’m 65 so I’ve had plenty. This article lost me when it quoted an MD purportedly saying something that is simply not true: that X-rays don’t cause cancer. Cancer risk from ionizing radiation like X-rays is ADDITIVE. There is no dose or exposure amount below which the risk is zero. People who fly on long haul routes a

Over the past few weeks, the Northern Lights have been spotted in the Arctic Circle, but the SWPC’s current forecast indicates a possibility that they could be visible at around midnight local time this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as far south as the U.S., thanks to forecasted geomagnetic storms.”

Lots of these plying the roads here in Alaska. I like to drive my non-turbo, 12 year old Subaru Impreza at or a mile or two below the speed limit when one of these MFs creeps up behind me. It’s dangerous to drive any faster when you are basically blinded by its high Kelvin temperature front beams going super nova in

Rolling my eyes a bit at this. You don’t have to go to Norway for examples useful to your largely US audience. Here in one US state, most of us try to get outside for at least an hour or so during the middle of the day each winter to get some daylight. I certainly do — I walk (or ski with) my two dogs in the half

Totally agree. Who needs the government telling me I can’t drive drunk? It’s *my* body, and my car, and it’s not like my choices could possibly have a deadly effect on others. Same deal for seatbelts, and helmets for motorcyclists. For that matter, I’m sick and tired of laws regulating what’s in my food, my drinking,

I’m another FB Purity user and last I checked it only runs on Chrome for computers, not devices.

I use Facebook mainly tp participate in the numerous closed groups I belong to, and I use F.B. Purity to control it —no ads, no marketplace, far less fluff. F.B. Purity is a Chrome extension that doesn’t work on devices. When I rarely open Facebook on my Android phone, I am quickly reminded how much I hate its format
