In the WaPo article the experts that were interviewed seem to suggest that the reason is doesn’t happen more often is mostly because of dumb luck. People who admit it could happen to them, who then take actual preventable measures such as the ones

The article isn’t really about being distracted though, it’s about the ways in which our brains tend to shift to autopilot without us realizing. It’s actually not my analogy, it’s from what the experts in the WaPo piece have said after studying this issue. If you think what I’m saying is just my own weird opinion perhaps you should re-read what the experts interviewed in the piece have to say.
