It's more about consistency, maybe? If everybody else is speaking accented english and one guy isn't, it's incredibly distracting and may signal that either the actor was too lazy to manage an accent or so bad at it that production decided it was better to have none at all.

I could have pigeon-holed almost any classmate in my high school into one of the Breakfast Club categories (if Princess = Mean Girl). The only exceptions were the honor roll athletes - which my school had a lot of, because Hospital Town.
