The reason its there is that it provides some visual semblance when people are completely used to a grille that not having one on just feels weird. Next generation or next two generations stuff should get much funkier as people become accustomed to electric cars.

You're painting with a very broad brush here. Conservative (as in backwards and close minded, sometimes but not always politically) Japanese, like conservative Americans, try to mask their side of the war as if it wasn't as bad as it seemed. It's not a majority of the people.
I don't see India, Japan or S. Korea having any problems.
