I was passing by a record store one day, many years ago, and the marquee informed me that Bobcat Goldthwait would be doing a record signing in 10 minutes. So I waited in line, and then when I got to the front I told him I'd just watched Scrooged (not true) and asked him what it was like working with Bill Murray. He

Joe Dante definitely needs more work. He talked about how incredibly difficult it is for him to get anything financed. Maybe he needs to get on kickstarter or something. I'd contribute.

I've actually really gotten into Lewis within the past year. His performance can definitely be grating at times, and every caricature you've ever seen of him is not an exaggeration. But it's important to keep in mind that his character is meant to be obnoxious.

I just realized that my wording made it sound like we gave him a key to the city or something. We did not, but we did give him a plaque with a drawing of Vincent Price's face on it.

I guarantee the plot is probably the least interesting aspect of that movie, so it's definitely worth checking out. Your enjoyment of the film will depend heavily on your tolerance for Jerry Lewis, though.

Also, Small Soldiers is responsible for the Rodeo Cheeseburger, a truly delicious sandwich, which can still be found to this day in America's very finest Burger Kings.

That reminds me of one of John Waters's best quotes: "Sometimes I wish I was a woman, just so I could have an abortion."

I agree with you on All About Eve and Barcelona, though it should be noted that Barcelona is hardly a visually interesting film either. I've always liked Stillman because he seems like such an odd guy to get into filmmaking. I mean, what other director would feature an unironic plug for Dale Carnegie in his movie?

Yeah, meeting Joe Dante was pretty cool. I wanted to ask him about Jonathan Rosenbaum's (in)famous review of Small Soldiers, in which he argues that it is a far better film than Saving Private Ryan, but it seemed like kind of weird thing to say to him, especially since I know he's friends with Spielberg.

Ah, Ninotchka! Another great Wilder-Brackett script (see Ball of Fire below). And Garbo sure does laugh!
