You may remember me from such features as Random Roles, or my oral histories of Battle of the Network Stars and Airplane!

Originally I tried to transcribe it in full, but I quickly realized that describing it was actually going to be funnier. I’m just glad it made it through the edit.

Yeah, I guess I didn’t really flesh out my thought well enough on that. I knew it was a UK import, but what I was really thinking was that it was surprising that they’d put it on Peacock after only one series had aired in the UK, especially since it’s been renewed for a second series. Knowing the average US viewer, I Read more

I absolutely agree with your sentiment, but I gotta tell ya, I had so many roles to choose from, and he had stories for basically all of ‘em that I asked about, so I got in as many as I could. But it was a constant balancing act, trying to figure out what I absolutely could not drop with what I really wanted to ask. Read more

Probably my greatest regret of the conversation.

For the record, it is not the AV Club’s fault that you’ve never seen that Random Roles. First of all, it took me, like, five years of requesting to even get on the phone with him at all, then I got less time with Slater than I requested - I asked for the standard 30 minutes that we request of all RR interviewees, they Read more

Yeah, I don’t know why they cut it, but I told him the story that John Heard told about the Gene Hackman / Andrew Davis encounter that *he* witnessed during the filming of The Package, and it was much more in line with every other Gene Hackman story I’ve ever heard, and that’s what led him to talk about Burt Lancaster.

Thank you, Conchata Ferrell, for the best Rip Torn story in any Random Roles interview.

Oh, it’s a Random Roles no matter who does it. It’s an AV Club feature, it’s not solely a Will Harris feature. But if it’s video, then that leaves me out of the equation altogether.

Oh, c’mon, if I can take several deep breaths - like, a hundred - and then shrug and say, “So it goes,” then so can you.

Guaranteed, James Burrows was even less amused by Jamie Foxx’s fourth-wall break than Wanda Sykes was. But with that said, after all the sitcom episodes he’s directed over the years, I’ll bet he does a masterful slow burn.

I really did want to ask him about Deep Rising - it was on my list to ask, for sure - but he was on a schedule, and the native Virginian in me led to wrapping up with The New World. Plus, it rarely disappoints to ask an actor about the experience of working with Terrence Malick. And, hey, you can’t say he didn’t come Read more

I am a HUGE Kylie fan. But loving her music have never translated to reading a lot of articles about her (I always just skipped straight to the pictures), so I’d never heard that nickname before. When I Googled it post-interview, though, I got the impression that she didn’t exactly love being called that, so I’m Read more

Well, he doesn’t *technically* say anything bad about True Colors, but there are several heaping helpings of subtext within his comments. (The remark about heading back to New York afterwards leaps to mind.)

I have pitched Pierce Brosnan before...and that’s as far as it got. But I agree, I think he’d be great.

I would argue that any actor is made for this feature as long as they’re willing to tell their stories. Not everyone is. But God knows character actors are!

I can only promise that I have a list of great subjects. Beyond that, it’s all up to the AV Club’s freelance budget and the storytelling skills of the actor.

Hello, my name is Mr. Sirrah, and I come from...someplace far away! Yes, that’ll do. Anyway, I like the way this D.I. Keith Fowler thinks!
