You absolutely should be putting it on before you go out so it has time to dry and you don’t rub it all of when you get in the car. I’m also a red head and I put it on before I go out and reapply often, how often you reapply probably depends on the activity. If I’m sweating or swimming I reapply more often. 

I use both. I cover everything I can easily cover with lotion, and then get places like the back of my neck and shoulders, if I’m alone with the spray. I actually haven’t gotten burnt this year at all and I’ve spent a good bit of time outside.

You could also take your blow dryer to it. Just make sure you hit all the sections. Your risk of catching it is pretty low though, you’d have to try it on really close to when an infected person tried it on. They can’t live off of a person for very long.
