Except his vote yes meant nothing in terms of whether Kavanaugh got confirmed or not. Had he voted no Pence would have simply cast the tie-breaking vote. Or they would’ve made that one Senator miss his daughter’s wedding. Either way, a no vote from Manchin wasn’t stopping it.

Huh? The second comment is also the author’s opinion. The “conventional wisdom” referenced is that Dems in red states should vote for Trump’s SCOTUS nominee (since he won their state.) Blest disagreed with the conventional wisdom, saying they had more to lose by going along with this.
