I read Confederates in the Attic as a teen and loved it, and I think its discussion of race and historical representation is really on point for this discussion.

FaustianSlip! I would love to hear more about your reenacting FB group! I actually bopped onto this thread because a couple of people I know through reenacting (Boston-based 1860s dancing ftw) have been all aflutter about the hoop skirt ban, and I was immensely curious to see the comments here. I'm ambivalent on the

I've been going to a women's only gym for the past couple of years, and I now live in fear that I will someday move away from the city-based three locations. It is such a different experience from when I work out at other co-ed facilities.

Whoooo! I'm excited this has finally been officialized! I work part-time at Orchard House (the LMA museum), and the script writer's been around, which makes me hopeful.

Bostonian here!

Thank you! The Boy and I had our first fight over something very similar to what your husband said. We were out with a group of my (almost all-lady) friends and one of them asked him if he was a feminist. He asked if it was a trick question because that word is "controversial." I lost my shit at him a little bit

That's great to hear! I'm doing something similar—I'm starting with a men's long-sleeved tshirt and using the seams in the front to take it in to my size, but I only did straight darts in the back...and it's stretchy, so no zipper. I haven't got it looking quite right yet, but I'll get there hopefully!

It also only shows the nurse's science uniform—other female scientists have the black collar, rather than the blue. (I totally appreciate your neuroses...I just finished making all those weird seams on my uniform!)

Harrison's is not great :/
Have you been to Silver Moon Comics (also in Salem)? I've heard good things.

I'm sorry your local shop is shitty (and I'm in no way denying those exist—I know they do), but there are lots of really awesome comic stores too! I'd rather frequent the good ones and help them thrive than avoid all comics stores because some of them haven't left the stone ages.

It's too bad those are far away for you now! Comicaze is my local shop and they rock. If you don't mind dealing with street/small lot parking on a weekend evening (so it's free!), they sponsor a free Halloween party at the local VFW hall every October and it's a lot of fun!
