What is your thoughts on handing down cars to kids when they are older? I’m planning on letting my kids choose between my 04 Mustang Mach 1, 93 240SX convertible, and 95 Buell S2 motorcycle when they graduate college. Bad dad for giving them crappy cars or dangerous vehicles or is this an awesome plan?
CP just because I don’t like to encourage car hoarders. Use it or lose it. Cars are not an investment. They are a tool for utility or pleasure.
The one place a Sportster 1200 motor works well and feels fast is in the Buells. The iso-planar engine mount system uses the motor as a stressed member of the frame and isolates all but the worst vibrations from the motor. It still vibrates but not, lose your fillings levels. And being nothing but a motor, some…
Keep going.....
V-Rod is dead and, although not forward controls, it was still not a rear set control like a sport bike (which it was not). My old man had a V-Rod with a T25 turbo on it for drag racing and ended up putting dummy pegs out back and using an air shifter to change gears. It took too long and was too much effort to swing…
Awesome that you have an SV1000, I learned to ride on an 07 SV650S.
AMF all over again....
I think you make some valid points. The end of your post is the key issue with HD though. There are too many that are used available, no one in their right mind would buy one new. If the company hopes to survive, they need something people will buy new. As full disclosure, I ride a 95 S2 with the Evo motor in it. Its…
Please, inform me the last time they really innovated on anything? The V-Rod motor was developed by Porsche, and motors in the Buell 1125s were a Rotax product. The motor in the Street is just a development from the Revolution motor in the V-Rod so still needed someone to hold their hand on that one....
I’ll have you know I have rebuilt both a the motor in my S2 as well as a 90s-era and a modern (2002) four cylinder engine. I may not be a graduate of some engineering course but I know my way around an engine.
The question is can (or would they be willing to) develop something like that fast enough to survive? Seems antithetical to “the Brand” so I doubt they would even consider it.
The V-Rod had semi-forward controls. My old man raced one in IHRA events with a t25 turbo on the side (160whp) for a few years and it was always awkward trying to get my feet up and in front of me from a stop light. He ended up going with an airshifter so he could just drag his feet down the track and stay tucked.
Very true. The parts prices are also insane. My S2 uses H-D hand controls, and I dropped it learning to ride. It snapped the ball off the end of the clutch lever. Any guess the price of that particular component? Just the lever itself, not the clamp, fluid tank, or anything......almost $70. For a chunk of cast…
Its looked stupid since day 1. Buell was a skunkworks to be different and innovate. They had an R&D branch that could have funded itself and they tossed it.
This death spiral is a long time coming though. HD has focused on its core brand and image to the detriment of future survival. I ride a Buell, so I have to venture into HD dealers for parts. I also grew up with a father who had a Fat Boy as well as his S2 Thunderbolt and spent many weekends at HOG meetings.
You know, I’m not normally a fan of wheels with the little bolts around the rim (too busy looking for me) but god, those are some beautiful rims.
You have no idea how badly I want to make it a manual. Sadly my wife is handicapped and cant deal with a manual trans. She loves the car and drives it too so...yeah slushbox stays.
