It would be much harder to avoid those companies if they made good games. I like my Street Fighter so that's the only Capcom game I buy and I'll definitely get handheld SE games since they're mostly problem free.

I'd say that Emerald is the best point to jump in now. The remakes of Gen 1 and 2 far surpass the originals, but Emerald has the best "old feel with new systems to make the game more enjoyable".
