I know what was meant by not brutal. What happened to Alex in the original movie was horrendous because you saw three PEOPLE methodically gunning a man down, and laughing about it, making fun of him. Alex was dead man walking, but they kept shooting. When Kurtwood Smith shot of Alex's hand it was evil.

The shooting in the original showed human beings at their most vicious, laughing and cracking jokes as they took their time killing Murphy. The gangsters in the original enjoyed killing. Also, the gang who did it to him was also the main antagonist of the movie, which gave him a neat little story arc. He could put a face to the people who killed him and as he hunted them down he regained the memories of his humanity.
