You just described the difference between a treatment and a cure. Obviously a cure is better but they tend to be orders of magnitude more difficult to achieve and for people suffering from the symptoms of a disease abatement is no small accomplishment.

Watch the series. The first season is really brilliant. The movie will probably be less rich if you watch it without at least the first season under your belt.

Rob Thomas already said as much. They are publishing official Veronica Mars novels, and they hope to make a second movie. If they do, and if I recall correctly, the novels will be considered canon, and the second movie may or may not be based on those.
