I never ever thought I'd see the day when the FIA and Formula One was a more level-headed motorsports body.

I have a lot of favorites from various shows, but one that definitely deserves a mention is: Battlestar Galactica, "33." Set the bar for the entire run of the show, and *raised* it for TV in general.

If you want a real answer... it is kind of complicated. First of all, you say cylinders over displacement... lets just look at it like this. You start with a displacement, say 3 liters. Then you are trying to achieve the most power. An over simplification, but basically true statement is that displacement x rpm

LOVE discussions like this.

Thanks, guys. I'll leave you guys to ponder 4 different engine configurations of the same 3.0 liter displacement:

Nope. The 215 V8 was a BUICK engine. Olds used it for the F-85 and added a turbo for '62, but the engine was Buick design. In fact, the 3800 V6, despite its 2 fewer cylinders and 16ci extra displacement, is related to the 215 V8.

You are trading power delivery & smoothness against friction. Also, horsepower is easier to make with higher rpms from lighter parts due to smaller reciprocating masses.

For technical people out there, when making an engine, given a set total displacement, why would you chose more cylinders over bigger displacement per cylinder? Wouldn't all of the extra parts bring more losses from mass and friction?

The Olds F85's 215 JetFire V8. Not only was it incredibly small, it also had an aluminum block, a turbo, not to mention the Turbo-Rocket-Fuel Water injection.

Coventry Climax 1.5L. Beautiful

Dedicated to all of you, who think Lotus is an obvious choice.

I mean, i'm no ASE-certified engine turbificationizer, with all the racheting VTECs, positive-pressure plasma connectifiers, and specialized edumacation that such a title would imply, but even i know that the belt to the crankshaft is to keep the cams from oversplining, while the power actually comes from the

I love Volvo for their safety innovations. Now if they'd just let someone else design the outside.

I think it's time that we add another point. Make it a 4-point harness, I'd be kool with a 6-point harness too..

Good guy volvo - has million dollar idea, doesn't use it to make millions but to help the greater good instead.

I replied to Iwantmystarback in this vein, but yes it looks like IKEA stuff because Rams pioneered the modern era of industrial design and actually invented the concepts that we are so familiar with now. That's kind of like saying "I don't get the Beatles, they just sound like Green Day".

You are using 2013 eyes. To appreciate how monumental his designs were, you would have to adopt 1950-1970s eyes. Like with Marcel Duchamp's work, one now wonders why a toilet in a gallery is any big deal, but we have grown up with post-modern deconstructivism in our mainstream media.

Sounds like you married a smart girl. I've discovered that there is very little point trying to explain modern minimalism to people who don't like it. Either you like it or you don't - and a lot of people don't. The point is that it was coming out of this malaise of post-war design leftovers somewhere between art-deco
