My assumption is to avoid attracting attention. Walking around arctic areas in just street clothes, or in this case tight leather, would be a give away you aren’t human. Or maybe it’s to cover up the tight leather so we can try to focus on plot and dialogue.

While I am sure there were a lot of people that voted for Trump due to some kind of racist nonsense, that wasn’t the only reason. I would bet it probably isn’t even the major reason.
